--- History of your character
Garrald Vickers was born around 5pm in Mercy Hospital, New York City on August 18, 1988 to Carter and Carol Vickers and was the middle of three children. He was born into wealth with his father owning a newspaper and his mother being a fashion designer, though few people knew that his dad was also the leader of a prominent criminal organization in the NYC underworld. Regardless, the family lived well in a large penthouse apartment atop the newspaper building that Carter owned.
All of the children were put through private school, Garrald was no exception, and after his elder brother joined the Marines in 2004, he was the only hope of going to college and being the next male heir to run the company as well as the crime family. With Jordan's death in mid 2006, it was confirmed by his father that Garrald held the future of the family in the palm of his hands and he began to look after his sister Ashley who had taken the death of her brother harder than anyone else. She and Jordan had always been close, so Garrald stepped in as the protector and mentor for his baby sister often fighting men at school that put hands on her and consoling her when she had a broken heart. She married at the age of seventeen to a young man by the name of Gregory who quickly swooped in and took the job away from her brother though the two sibling still remained close while Garrald went off to college to study business.
It was in college that he began to indulge in alcohol, drugs and sex though it was the spiral caused by the death of his mother which eventually got him expelled and sent back home to his father who, while disappointed, told his son that he'd pay for him to return but he'd have to spend a year working for the family business to pay it off. Begrudgingly, Garrald accepted the offer and began working alongside Tommy Ancoletti who was ten years older and had been in the criminal underworld for nearly a decade following time in jail for robbery. The two men became good friends over the next few months and earned their keep for Carter. Over time, Garrald began to see Tommy as a father figure after becoming estranged from Carter due to his marriage to a woman that could be his daughter.
With Tommy's guidance, Garrald became a marksman and brutal earner for the mob for the next couple of years. Everything changed one night when Tommy murdered a man, his wife and two kids with a car bomb and Garrald realized that he could never be that kind of person to kill an entire family. His concience having gotten the better of him, he went to his father to get out which, due to being his son, he granted; however, as terms for leaving the mob and not having a target on his back, he was forced to leave New York and never return. He didn't want to leave, but knew he had to and after an argument with Tommy over leaving and how he saw Tommy as nothing but a kid killer and not the man he thought he was, Garrald visited his sister before leaving the city.
It was on the steps of his sister's apartment that Tommy came by in an effort to kill Garrald in both retaliation for his words as well as on the word of Carter who had decided his son was too much of a liability to keep alive. Hearing the car draw near, Garrald tackled his sister as the bullets came flying to protect her and took a round in the shoulder. The car moved on, but he soon realized the round that had passed through him and been the one to rip into his sister's chest killing her instantly. In a fit of despair, Garrald saught out the man responsible and hunted Tommy for weeks though turned up nothing. Finally, going to his father, he found that Tommy had left the city and he didn't know where he went.
After punching his father in the face for causing the death of his sister and leaving him for dead, he left New York City looking for Tommy and will not rest until he is dead for what he had done. The only thing that kept him from killing his father was that his sister adored him and he knew that she would never approve of such things. After jumping around the country for over a year, Garrald tracked Tommy down to Los Angeles and has taken a job as private security for a nightclub in hopes of finding his old friend that had betrayed him and putting a bullet between his eyes.
OUT OF CHARACTER!
-----sampleroleplay:
New York was always dark, cold and depressing even in the day time but in the late evenings as the sun vanished behind the skyscrapers ushering in the darkness, the real underbelly of the city began to show. Muggers wandered the streets looking for purses and wallets of unwitting pedestrians that were foolish enough to walk the sidewalks after dark in the wrong parts of town. Gangs broke into stores looking for cash, peddled drugs on street corners and spray painted their tags on every building they came across while also beating men senseless in back alleys. It would seem that there was no good left in the world if all people knew was the darkness that was the Big Apple at night; Garrald knew that darkness having grown up with it and seeing it in his fathers eyes only to become a trigger man himself to pay off debts.
He was happy to be leaving the city and the life after realizing what monsters the mafiosos truly were in that Tommy had willingly and brutally watched as a family of four died in an explosion. The screams of the children inside the car would haunt Garrald until the day his died and the wife who tried to pull them out only to be gunny down by his old mentor was truly the stuff of nightmares. They had been sent to take out the driver, the father, and a man who had stolen millions from the family though, looking back, Garrald didn't think he could pull the trigger on a father and leave his family to mourn for the rest of their lives. He wasn't a monster and knew he had to get away but just counted himself lucky his father was willing to allow it at the cost of losing all privilages to be in New York.
The young man didn't know where he was going to go from there, but knew that he had to see Ashley one more time or he'd never forgive himself. His baby sister was the only bright thing he had in the world after his brother died in the war, and he'd taken it upon himself to practically raise her and be the shoulder for her to cry on or the fist to beat down boys stupid enough to grope her. She was an angel in a family of devils; blonde-headed, green eyed with a tan that could rival a Hawaiin Tropic supermodel. Despite her looks, she had a spirit that couldn't be tampered and had remained a virgin up until she was married which was rare in that day and age. He was just happy that she'd found a good man that worked hard to take care of her, never abused her, and was willing to put up with the risk of the mafia father having him shot at any moment.
After knocking on the door, Garrald pulled his long, black overcoat tight around him to ward off the cold wind blowing down the street only to smile as he met eyes with his baby sister who seemed as happy to see him as he was her. After a hug and a kiss to her cheek, the look in her eyes changed from excitement and joy to that of worry and regret. While he knew that his father would never call his sister to let her in on family business, Ashley had always been able to know when something wasn't right with her big brother and that moment was no exception.
"I'm never going to see you again, am I," she asked with a shaky voice resting one hand on her hip and the other running through her blonde locks. Her husband was working, which made breaking the news easier to her, though it still wasn't something he wanted to think about.
"I won't lie to you, Ash," he began followed by a sigh. He could never lie to his sister and get away with it so didn't see the need to start then, "I have to leave the city. I won't be coming back, but I wanted to tell you before I left and let you know that I'll call you whenever I find a place so you can visit."
The look of worry turned to a look of anger and she slapped him across the face, "You stupid bastard! I told you not to get involved with that shoot-em-up lifestyle, didn't I?! But you didn't listen and now daddy's told you to leave town. You know Dad... he'll kill you, he doesn't care. After Jordan and Mom died, he's stopped caring about the rest of us." Her eyes welled with tears as she stopped and shook her head, swallowing hard just as the tears began to fall, "Damn you, Garrald..."
"Hey," he said in a hushed tone, pulling his sister into a hug, "I'm not dying. No one is dying. I'm not like these other guys. I can't just kill a family because my father said to... I won't. But I want you to know that I will always be there for you." He pulled back, resting his hands on his sister's shoulders, "You hear me? You need me for anything - anything at all, you call me and I'll be here. Got that? You're my baby sister. I love you and I won't abandon you like Dad."
She nodded and the two hugged once more but the sound of a car approaching too slow for the area drew Garrald's attention. He caught sight of the muzzle through the lowered window just in time to grab his sister and fall to the ground as the gun fired and bullets hit the bricks and windows to the building. The instant burning, followed by a throbbing pain in his right shoulder indicated that he had been shot though he knew enough about gunshots to know it wasn't lifethreatening.
The car sped off as quickly as it had arrived, probably believing Garrald to be dead and after a moment, he sat up on the step to examine his wound, "Jesus..." Blood was seeping through the wound, though it had passed through the front meaning he'd heal up nicely. It wasn't until he turned to his sister, noticing she hadn't sat up screaming at him that he was hit by the ton of emotional bricks. She lay still on the top of the steps, eyes closed, not breathing and a single bullet hole in her chest. The bullet that had passed through him had lodged in his sister and his eyes widened in shock and he took her in his arms. "No... oh, God, please no!"
His eyes welled up, holding his sister's lifeless body in his arms, pushing her hair from her face and holding her cheeks in his bloody palms, "No, you're okay... we... we just have to.. t-to get you to a doctor." He turned his sister's head to the side and gave her a shake in frustration, "WAKE UP! Please... Ash, please don't do this..." Tears streamed down his face as he pulled his sister into his chest, lowering his head, completely devestated that she was gone. After a few moments of crying, he reared his head back, stared up at the sky and screamed a lament of total sorrow having lost the only good thing in his life and blaming himself for her death knowing that, had he not gone to see her, she'd still be living.
The sound of sirens in the distance woke Garrald from his trance and with burning, tear-filled eyes, he looked down once more at his sister's body, carrying her into the house, laying her on the couch. "Ashley...." he had no words and shook his head, "I'm... sorry... I love you, baby sister... I'll get him... I swear to you... I will get him for this." He turned and looked at the open door as people began to gather on the street outside while the sirens drew nearer. He knew the his father would know what happened and he vowed then and there to kill the man that ended his sister's life as he bolted out the back as to not end up in prison.
