Could a Lion love a lamb? Who could see beyond this surface? Who will love me as I am? Evan walked the mall with his hand in his pocket. He smiled at everyone who passed, laughing to himself. They didn't realize that he was a local celebrity. They didn't realize that he was the one that they listened to every morning on their way to work, or every afternoon around lunchtime, or the one who they listened to at dinner time with the family. They didn't realize that the man with the sexy voice was the man who smiled at them in the mall. If they heard his name, they would know who he was, but he couldn't walk around with a name tag on all day. That defeated the purpose. Being a radio personality and a local celebrity was great. In fact, he was the best kind of celebrity there was. Being on the radio, no one cared what he looked like. In fact, most people didn't know. He was never followed by the paparazzi for this very reason. He still got the fangirling and the starstruck women when he talked or introduced himself, and there wasn't a high enough number to express the number of pictures he'd been in. But on days when he just wanted to relax, he simply had to keep his mouth shut and smile. Sometimes, Evan wondered why no one ever recognized him. He often talked about being one-legged on the radio. Though it was true, people didn't want to walk around asking every one-legged man that they saw if they were Evan Talman, the radio star. But then again, not many people had only one leg, either. Evan limped through the mall as he always did, swinging his prosthetic leg forward while stepping normally with his other leg. Most people would look at him and feel sorry for him, wondering how long it took him to adapt to this way of life, when in reality, this was all he had ever known. He continued to smile at everyone who stared at him as he passed, confusing them momentarily. It was almost as if they had expected to see him angry or sad. In reality, Evan just wanted to smile. People were so angry nowadays. They hated their jobs, they hated their friends, they hated technology... Sometimes it was nice to get something positive from a random stranger, someone you didn't love or hate. Evan liked to think that on days like today, with nothing to do but walk the mall and smile, he was making people's lives happier, one grin at a time. Evan came upon his destination for the day: A small bookstore within the mall. There was a new book out that people couldn't shut up about, so Evan knew he had to read it. Keeping his shows current got his radio show listeners and kept ratings up. Besides, if he didn't read it now on his own account, he knew that his boss would soon think the same thing, and would demand that he read the book. It was always better to be one step ahead of the boss: That way you got praises and bonuses instead of lectures. Evan made his way through the bookshelves, looking for the book of choice. He was starting to grow concerned that it was sold out, knowing that if it was as popular as it seemed to be, it would have been displayed in the front of the store. He stroked his chin in thought. "Hmm..." He said, shrugging. There were plenty more bookstores around. Evan turned sharply to leave the store, unaware that there was someone standing right behind him. "OOPS!" He said, crashing into the figure. "I'm so sorry. Are you okay?" He asked, flustered. He hoped the person wouldn't be too angry with him, of course, he WAS a cripple. People should know better than to get in his way. |
